An invitation by the organisers of Newcastle Show, saw the Microsprints travel North to take part in a "Speedway Extravaganza".The Broadmeadow venue is one that is not foreign to Speedway, having staged Speedway Motorcycle events as recently as this season. Held as part of the normal show ring events, the Micros where joined by the Quarter Midgets and Speedway Karts, with all three divisions sheduled for a total of three runs over the course of the afternoon, comprising two 6 Lap "heats" and a 10 Lap "Feature".Add Figure 8 races,Caravan&Dunny race and the ever popular Demolition Derby and the large and apprecative crowd where kept both thrilled and entertained.
On a surface that showcased the competing divisions perfectly, the "racing" was simply breathtaking(how good would a proper race meeting be).Crossing the line first in each event was Rhys Marchant,Dick Koen and Steve Ellicott, while the remaining drivers,Amanda Little,Brent Keller and Brett Sainsbury had an absoulute ball on an awesome racetrack.
The purpose of the exersise was to promote the sport of Speedway in the Newcastle area, with the view to kickstarting regular racing.Speedway in the Newcastle area has been in the doldrums since the much lamented closure of the Newcastle Motordrome, and it is hoped, the day enabled them to get a step closer to realising the dream. A big thank you to organisers Dave Ryan and his crew, Dick&David Koen and all the competitors for making the day a success.
