Saturday night(29th April),saw a healthy contingent of Microsprints assemble at Nowra Speedway to contest the resheduled NSW Championship, following an aborted attempt several months ago.Adding to the already strong local lineup, that was bristling with many current and former State and National Champions where the Queensland cars of Mark Giersbergen and Les Nelson. With such an impressive aray of talent on offer, the racing was simply sensational. This was helped by promoters(Wollongong Speedway Club) providing an awesome racetrack that was good all night.
Heat races proved highly entertaining, with the good crowd on hand apprecitive of the tight racing. No one driver emerged as clear favorite at the conclusion of the heats, with Rhys Marchant,Brett Sainsbury and Les Nelson being the respective winners.Queensland Champion,Paul Curran, had his second rollover of the season in Heat 2,but was able to restart and finish with a damaged wing,to secure valuable points.Former State and National title holder Rhys Marchant, was a retirement from Heat 2,(while on a chare from the back),with a blown engine, continuing his wretched season. He took no further part in proceedings.
At the completion of the heats,Les Nelson emerged as high points scorer, followed by Brett Sainsbury,Paul Curran and Jay Hall rounding out the top four. As the field took the green for the start of the 15 Lap final,Sainsbury, starting from position two,got the jump onNelson and led as they raced down the back straight.Disaster struck at the rear of the pack,as Dick Koen became entangled and rode out another wild flip(that's number 3,Dick).Bringing on the red lights.Subsequent bunching, saw the # 3 car of Brent Keller, make contact with another, causing him to spin wildly to a stop. With a lap yet to be run,a complete restart was ordered with everyone but Keller being able to rejoin the race. Sainsbury was unable to repeat the brilliant start of before,as the starter waved the flag, surrendering the led to Nelson who proceeded to open a gap over the chasing pack.He led every lap, driving a faultless race,to be a deserving winner, finishing half a straight clear of Sainsbury by race end.Brett had dropped back as far as fifth, before fighting his way back to second with a handful of laps left to run.Jay Hall put in an excellent drive to claim third.
